The Walker/Whitethorne families have an art show on exhibit this summer in the Runnel’s Art Gallery and the foyer at Eastern New Mexico University’s Golden Library.
Melveta Walker, director of the library, has some of her own arts and crafts in the exhibit, plus those of her grandchildren and adopted Navajo family, the Whitethornes.
Walker and her husband, Jerry, helped one of the Whitethorne boys gain admission to the Institute of American Arts in Santa Fe. The Walkers later took in three other boys from the family and maintained a strong bond with the Whitethornes.
The exhibit includes mother Alice Whitethorne’s native crafts — rugs, baskets and beadwork, as well as many Southwest-themed paintings and other arts and crafts done by her children and grandchildren and Walker’s grandchildren.
Among the Walker grandchildren’s exhibits are works by Shawn Carrell of Portales, a taxidermist, and Suzie Carrell-Childers of Clovis, who does sculpture, acrylic painting and ceramics.
A reception for the artists will be held at the library from 3-6 p.m. Monday. The public is invited.
