Essay winner

The Elida seventh and eighth grade students participated in a writing contest hosted by the Daughters of the American Revolution. We are proud to announce that Haley Powell is the eighth grade contest winner for the El Portal Chapter of the DAR essay contest. The El Portal chapter includes schools within Curry and Roosevelt counties.

The essay contest is held annually by each chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, DAR. Students from grades 5 through 8 are eligible to participate. This year, Mrs. Tibbs' seventh and eighth grade students participated in the contest. DAR chose the topic, “The Ideals of the Gettysburg Address”. Students competing in that bracket were required to write between 600 to 1,000 words on the ideals of the Gettysburg Address in relation to the people in 1860, and how the Gettysburg Address continues to provide a message for people today.

We are proud of all of the students who diligently applied their efforts to the project and applaud Haley Powell for winning. Her paper has been sent to the American History chairman to compete at the state level. Haley has also been invited to read her paper and accept her award at the next DAR meeting in Clovis. Once again, congratulations to Haley for her achievement.
