Portales man arrested for child abuse

Portales Police arrested a man for felony aggravated battery of a household member and two counts of child abuse Monday night.

At 10 p.m., Quarry Ren, 29, who lives at North Avenue I, was seen chasing a vehicle when the officer pulled him over on East Juniper Street and Boston Avenue, according to Police Capt., Lonnie Berry.

Berry said the officer found out that Ren had rammed who the police believe to be his former girlfriend’s vehicle.

“There was a seven month old baby involved,” Berry said. “That is the reason for the two counts of child abuse. The first count, is due to him previously battering the girlfriend, while she was holding the baby.”

Berry said the second count came when he rammed the vehicle with her and the baby in it.

Ren is currently being held in jail with an $11,500 bond, Berry said.

He is being charged with aggravated battery against a household member, two counts of child abuse, one count of aggravated battery for him striking her before hitting her with the vehicle, Berry said.

“He also has one count of resisting arrest,” Berry said. “That comes from when the officer first approached him some contact had taken place during that time.”

Berry said there was nothing to indicate that alcohol was involved with this.

“What started the argument, he was late bringing the child back,” Berry said. “She grabbed the car seat from him, and he got angry with her, and struck her.”
