The Salvation Army is celebrating the Super Bowl with a Souper Bowl.
The event serves as a fundraiser for the non-profit and is centered around, you guessed it, soup.
Attendees pay $5, choose a bowl to take home, and are served their choice of posole, green chili stew or potato soup. Deserts will be provided by the Clovis High School culinary arts program.
Maj. Tammy Ray said this is the second year the non-profit has hosted the event and hopes to make this year more successful than the first.
Board member Twila Rutter said last year’s event raised about $900.
A silent auction has been added to the agenda this year as another way to raise money.
Rutter said the idea for the Souper Bowl came from events held by other organizations.
“It was our choice as a board to ride on the coat tails of the Super Bowl,” she said.
Rutter said the organization plans to host the Souper Bowl annually on the Saturday before the Super Bowl.
“We hope (attendees) can experience what the Salvation Army is about when they come,” Rutter said. “And that’s doing good for our community.”
Ray said money raised by the event will go into the Salvation Army’s general funds to help those in need.
“We do what we do with the money from people in our community,” Rutter said. “Now in these tough economic times, the work of the Salvation Army is definitely needed in our community.”
Rutter said the event is also intended to bring the community together.
“They should come for the fun too,” Rutter said. “Come and enjoy the community, being apart and contributing.”
