Seventy-one runners and walkers raised more than $1,800 at the 10th Annual Heritage Days 5K Run/Walk and 10K Run, hosted by the Portales MainStreet Program and sponsored by Burger King on Saturday.
Runners and walkers met at the newly restored and renovated Yam Theater at 219 S. Main St. Participants received a t-shirt, and medals were awarded for first, second and third places by age categories.
This year, the event was also themed to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the New Mexico MainStreet Program.
“All proceeds from this non-profit fundraising event will be used toward the Portales MainStreet Program’s designated projects, aligning with the revitalization and rejuvenation of downtown Portales,” said Portales MainStreet Director Nicole Thornton.
“What made this year different was that we were able to show off the Yam Theater renovations,” said Danny Woodward, Portales MainStreet president. “We still have some work to do, but it’s an amazing transformation,” Woodward said.
Woodward added that successful projects required dedicated volunteers as well as support from the City of Portales.
“We are reviving downtown Portales little by little because of the support from volunteers and contributions from those who believe this is a worthwhile effort,” Woodward said. “Thank you for believing in our community.”
