Jail seeking program volunteers

The Curry County jail is seeking volunteers to run programs and services for inmates.

A training session will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday in the commission room at the courthouse.

Administrator Keith Norwood said volunteer inmate programs are an integral part of working toward rehabilitation and reducing recidivism among inmates.

“We need to offer these men (and women) much more than what we are giving them right now,” he said. “We need to make an effort to provide them with programs that can be utilized once they get out and hopefully keep them from coming back.”

Programs Norwood said he would like to see are religious services, GED classes, substance abuse counseling, life skills, CPR and first aid training and other pre-release programs to help equip inmates for challenges they will face when they integrate back into the community.

Norwood said he is also open to innovative or creative ideas for programs that could be offered.

Groups or individuals interested in providing programs or services should contact Norwood by Thursday to make arrangements to attend. Refreshments will be served during the training session.
