Goal in OT boosts Zias to 1-0 win

PORTALES — Senior defender Justine Tydings scored off a corner kick by freshman defender-midfielder Andrea Lister in the second minute of overtime Friday and the Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team beat East Central 1-0 at the ENMU pitch for the Zias’ first Lone Star Conference win of the season.

With the victory, ENMU (4-11, 1-7 LSC) snapped a seven-match losing streak — all in conference play. The Zias had the better of it most of the way, outshooting the Tigers 16-8 overall and 4-2 in shots on goal during regulation but unable to punch one into the net.

Tydings’ goal was her fourth of the season. Junior Sierra Cardenas earned the shutout, making two saves in goal.

The Zias, last in the LSC, moved within one-half game of the Tigers (5-8-2, 1-6-1) in the conference standings. It was their first match since third-year coach Ray Nause announced his resignation on Monday, effective at the end of the season.

ENMU returns to action on Sunday, hosting conference foe Northeastern State in its final home match of the season.
