SAN ANTONIO — On the first day of October, the Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team played Incarnate Word to a 2-2 Lone Star Conference tie at the ENMU pitch in a battle of nationally-ranked teams.
On the last day of October, the Greyhounds’ ended a tough month with a 4-0 loss to the now-17th-ranked Cardinals. After going 7-1 and reaching a No. 17 ranking nationally in September, the Hounds (8-7-2, 2-4-1 LSC) finished a rugged October slate with only one win and two ties to show for nine matches.
UIW’s Callum Riley scored a hat trick, including the first two of the Cardinals’ three goals in the first 10 1/2 minutes of the contest. Riley added his other goal at the 73:27 mark.
Jarred Kahan turned away three shots to post the shutout in goal for the Cardinals (11-2-3, 3-2-2).
Riley scored less than a minute into the contest on a long ball ahead from Michael Langford. His second goal and a tally by Tenny Adebowale came 35 seconds apart and effectively broke the match open.
ENMU hosts LSC leader and second-ranked Midwestern State in its season finale at 1 p.m. Friday.
Central Okahoma 3, ENMU women 0 — At Edmond, Okla., the Zias concluded the season with an LSC loss to the homestanding Bronchos in the final match for third-year ENMU coach Ray Nause, who announced his resignation earlier in the month.
ENMU (5-13-0, 2-9-0 LSC) trailed 1-0 until Summer Grantham and Sherri Collins popped in goals less than six minutes apart for the Bronchos early in the second half. Ashton Morris scored the first goal when she punched in a rebound into an open net just over seven minutes into the contest.
Samantha Rusk played the first half and Sidney Jackson the second in goal for UCO (10-7-1, 6-4-1) and had a relatively easy time, combining for only one save.
