Rambelles rally to beat Zias

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Angelo State overcame a seven-point deficit in the third set to finish off Eastern New Mexico University 25-12, 25-19, 29-27 Thursday night in Lone Star Conference volleyball.

The Rambelles (17-10, 12-1 LSC) moved into a tie for second place in the conference with Abilene Christian (24-4, 12-1), which lost to West Texas A&M at home 26-24, 25-21, 25-20 in a battle for first place. Angelo will have a chance to tie for the title on Saturday when it hosts WT (23-8, 13-0), while the Zias (13-15, 4-9) wrap up their season at ACU.

Kaelen Valdez had a double-double for the Rambelles with 13 kills and 12 digs, while Kayla Smith and Debbie Ohl each added eight kills.

Sophomore outside hitter Amber Durand collected 10 kills, six digs and three blocks for the Zias, while junior middle blockers Kristen Beck and Jessica King each had eight kills.

Angelo State used a 7-1 run to break out of a 3-3 tie with the Zias in the opening set and take control. The Rambelles opened a 10-3 lead in the second game, but the Zias closed to 11-9 on back-to-back kills by Durand and managed to keep it close most of the way.

The Zias jumped on ASU for the first four points in the third game and led 10-3 after a kill by King. Angelo State chipped away, taking its first lead at 22-21 on consecutive attack errors by ENMU.

The Zias twice had set point down the stretch, but the Rambelles scored the final three points on ENMU errors to close out the match.
