Brantley Lake State Park

• Location: Twelve miles north of Carlsbad. It is 2 hours and 50 minutes or 166 miles from Portales. It is 185 miles or 3 hours and 20 minutes from Clovis.

• What they offer: Brantley Lake is the southernmost lake and has water sports, year-round camping, sailing, boating, water-skiing, hiking trails, wildlife viewing and fishing during the summer.

• Kind of fish: Largemouth bass, walleye, channel catfish, white bass, bluegill and crappie. Due to recent findings of DDT in certain species of fish the New Mexico Environment Department and State Parks recommends catch and release only until further notice.

• Special event: Go-Fly-a-Kite in March; Shoreline Sweep in April is part of Earth Day celebration, Kids Fishing Clinic in May and Saturday night campground programs during the summer.

• Park fees: $5 per vehicle; Bicycle/walk-in is free; Bus $15; Camping; $8 primitive site; $10 developed; Electrical and sewage $18; Water hookup is free. Seven River Day and West side day-use areas are closed for the winter.
