A grass fire Friday morning northeast of Portales burned about 150 acres, according to a fire department spokesman.
No one was injured in the blaze reported about 11:31 a.m., said Portales Fire Department Lt. Floyd Hancock.
Hancock said the fire started on Highway 467 and spread to Roosevelt Roads 2 and 3.
“There was quite a bit of damage. We had to cut several fences,” Hancock said. “We had one point where we almost had it out, then the wind kicked up.”
Hancock said high winds of up to 30 mph spread the fire quickly and made it difficult to contain. The Arch Fire Department and the Clovis Fire Department assisted in the more than four hours it took to contain the fire.
