Hounds drop pair at Incarnate Word

Freedom New Mexico

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — Eastern New Mexico’s bats came alive a little too late Friday in a Lone Star Conference doubleheader loss at Incarnate Word.

Trailing 13-3 after five innings in the second game, ENMU scored eight runs over the next three innings — and left the potential tying runs in the ninth — but lost 13-11.

The Cardinals spotted ENMU a 2-0 lead in the opener before rallying for a 10-2 win.

Senior third baseman Kevin Thompson went 5-for-8 with two doubles and two runs batted in for ENMU (3-13, LSC 1-10) in the doubleheader.

Catcher Joe Huwer was 2-for-4 with four RBI in the nightcap, including a double and a two-home run in the eighth inning that made it 13-11.

Steven Vidaurri and Mike De La Rosa homered for the Cardinals (12-5, 11-3).

Taylor Vance (0-1), the first of five Hounds’ pitcher, took the loss.

In the opener, three consecutive two-out doubles from Daniel Patching, Mitch Wolfe and Thompson staked Eastern to a 2-0 lead. The Cardinals responded with 10 unanswered runs to pick up the win in the first meeting between the schools.

Wolfe, Thompson and Dillon Downs had two hits each for the Greyhounds.

Derrick Walls paced UIW with a 3-for-3 performance with three RBI while Matt Roohan and Daniel Qualls homered.

Andrew Martin (0-4) started for the Hounds and was charged with the loss.

The teams will conclude their LSC series noon Saturday with a single game.
