Lighthouse hosting spring break party

The Lighthouse Mission is hosting a Children’s Spring Break Day of Fun on Friday.

Executive Director Richard Gomez said the mission has held similar events in the past and is glad to be able to do it again.

“It’s a good thing for kids to have somewhere to go on spring break,” Gomez said.

Gomez said many families go out of town for spring break but not everyone can afford it.

“This gives them all an opportunity to say they went somewhere during spring break. They went to a party,” Gomez said.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the mission and will include games and food for free.

Games will be carnival-style such as bowling, pin the tail on the donkey, a cake walk and a sidewalk chalk event will be available.

Gomez said the staff at the mission has no idea how many children will attend.

“We’re hoping for between 100 to 1,000,” Gomez said with a laugh.

Gomez said despite tough economic times for the mission, he and the staff feel hosting such an event is an investment in children.

“It’s not easy but investing in kids is always good. We believe in investing in it for them,” he said.

Gomez said the event will be run by the staff and several dozen volunteers, who will serve as adult supervision.

Children can play games to win tickets and can spend the tickets at the shop for prizes.

Volunteer Keith Crompton is from Angel Fire but moved to Clovis recently to be close to his father. Crompton spent Thursday building games for the event.

“I think it’s wonderful,” Crompton said. “I have a couple of small kids. I wish we had this kind of thing where I grew up.”
