First run: 27th SOW Mission Support Group organizes base run

Cannon Connections: Liliana Castillo About 3,500 airmen of the Mission Support Group ran together for the first ever MSG run.

The 27th Special Operations Mission Support Group at Cannon Air Force Base held its first run March 16.

Chief Daniel Koning said he and Cannon’s command staff want to promote camaraderie and physical fitness throughout the MSG.

“And this is a fantastic way to do that,” Koning said.

Koning said about 3,500 airmen attended the run.

“Physical fitness is a part of our culture,” he said. “And it should be supported by the command. And camaraderie is part of physical fitness, so it works.”

Tech Sgt. Henry Serrano, with civil engineering, organized the event. He said he’s hoping having a group-specific run will begin a positive tradition for MSG.

“I think it’s a good tradition that is about ensuring our service members are in excellent shape for deployments and their general well being,” Serrano said.

He said it’s also good to get the group together to enjoy themselves.

Civil Engineering, Force Support, Security Forces, Logistics and Readiness, Contracting and Communications squadrons participated in the event.

Staff Sgt. Betsy Ulyak, with Force Support, said the run will help airmen be more motivated to run.

“We can help each other,” she said. “This is just another step to get each other in shape and moving.”

Maj. Todd Walker, with Logistics and Readiness, said he enjoyed that the run brought the whole group together so members of each squadron within the group can talk to others in the group.

“It’s a beautiful day,” Walker said. “It’s great to just go out and just run. It helps break up the monotony of the day. Also, readiness is so important.”

Serrano said the group will be running together monthly.
