Two teens, adult charged with murder in Portales killing (Updated)

For the second time in less than a year Roosevelt County teenagers are being charged with murder.

Portales police on Wednesday arrested 16-year-old Erick Pina from Arch, 21-year-old Alonso Quinonez of Portales and 17-year-old Alberto Ramirez of Portales in Sunday’s shooting death of 25-year-old Jose Alfredo Charize Montoya.

Police said Pina and others went to Montoya’s house to rob him, and Pina shot the victim in the head with a stolen .45 caliber handgun.

“He went there to confront the victim and steal the (victim’s) vehicle at that point,” Police Deputy Chief Lonnie Berry said.

Berry said the robbery was Pina’s idea.

Montoya’s stripped and torched car was discovered later in Texas.

Berry said Quinonez conspired with Pina before and after the armed robbery of Montoya, as well as helping him with an April 3 burglary in which a .45-caliber handgun and a television were stolen from Colorado Drive. Quinonez also helped dispose of the gun and television, Berry said.

Ramirez helped plan and commit the April 3 burglary, assisted Pina in getting to and from Montoya’s Avenue O residence and helped hide the stereo equipment taken from Montoya’s vehicle, Berry said.

Pina and Ramirez are to be held at the Quay County Juvenile Detention Center, while Quinonez is being held at Roosevelt County Detention Center in lieu of a $100,000 cash-only bond.

Berry said police expect to arrest three other people in connection with the incident.

Friday, a jury convicted 13-year-old DeAngelo Montoya of second-degree murder in the shooting death of ENMU student Angel Vale, 21. DeAngelo Montoya, also of Portales, will be sentenced after an evaluation and faces a maximum sentence of eight years in a state juvenile facility.

Although Montoya has the same name, he isn’t related to the victim in the homicide Sunday.

Berry said Pina is charged with an open count of murder and:

• armed robbery, a second-degree felony.

• aggravated burglary, a second-degree felony.

• tampering with evidence, a third-degree felony.

• two counts of receiving/disposing of stolen property, one a misdemeanor

and one a third-degree felony, based on the value of the items.

• conspiracy to commit armed robbery, a third-degree felony.

• conspiracy to commit residential burglary, a fourth-degree felony.

• unlawful possession of a handgun, a misdemeanor.

Police arrested Pina during a traffic stop between Clovis and Portales Wednesday afternoon.

“We were looking for him,” Berry said, adding that he found no prior criminal record for Pina.

Quinonez and Ramirez were arrested on Wednesday.

Quinonez is charged with felony murder and:

• accessory to armed robbery, a third-degree felony.

• misdemeanor tampering with evidence.

• third-degree felony disposal of stolen property.

• misdemeanor disposal of stolen property.

• two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a fourth-degree felony.

Ramirez is charged with felony murder and:

• accessory to armed robbery.

• conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

• aggravated burglary.

• conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary, a third-degree felony.
