Clovis MainStreet having sidewalk replaced

Clovis MainStreet is laying the groundwork for further Main Street renovations by replacing sidewalk along the historic byway.

With the help of the city of Clovis and Nick Griego and Sons, Clovis Main Street is replacing sidewalk between Fifth and Sixth streets.

Clovis MainStreet Executive Director Robyn Beaubien said the current project will look the same as the sidewalk that was replaced on the west side of Main Street between Sixth and Seventh streets.

Beaubien said the sidewalk should be complete by the beginning of next week at the latest.

Most of the sidewalk will be concrete with a 2-foot wide stripe of red cobblestones, Beaubien said to complement the cobbles in the street.

“We want to keep the historic feel,” Beaubien said.

Beaubien said the organization received a grant from New Mexico MainStreet for $131,000. The grant also paid for the digital sign MainStreet purchased last year.

Beaubien said the sidewalk on the fifth block of Main Street was so deteriorated that it was dangerous to walk on.

“Every little bit helps. That’s one thing about Main Street, improvements are incremental. You do a little bit and then another little bit and you end up with a really great product,” Beaubien said.

She said she is hoping to have enough money to do the east side of the Sixth Street block.

“We’ll continue down the street as we get the money and eventually down to First Street,” she said.

Clovis Mayor Gayla Brumfield said she believes the project is an excellent way to restore historic Main Street.

“The sidewalks were in a horrible state,” Brumfield said. “It’s a great project. The business owners are very happy about it.”
