Cannon youths keep busy

Cannon Connections: Liliana Castillo Santino Calloway sends the puck back to opponent Nashawn Hare during a game of air hockey June 23 at the Youth Center during open play time.

Cannon Air Force Base’s Youth Center has activities to engage and entertain youth ages 9 through 18 all year long.

Summer is no exception.

The program’s calendars through July are packed with activities ranging from clubs to FitFactor to tournaments and scrapbooking.

Open Recreation Coordinator Brandi Clay said the program’s purpose is to give Cannon’s youth a home away from home.

“We want to keep kids out of trouble. Give them something to do, a place to hang out with friends,” Clay said.

The program is free for all retired, active duty and DoD civilian employee dependents.

Clay said most bases charge for the Open Recreation Program.

“Because there is no public transportation here and Cannon is away from town, the program is free to offset the costs of driving back and forth. And it’s a little incentive,” she said.

This year, Clay said she is focusing on building up the teen program.

“We want to hear what teens want to do,” she said. “I’m just here to find the money to do what they want to do.”

Team Legion, formerly Air Force Teen Council, plans much of the teen activities in the Open Recreation Program.

Upcoming events include a paintball tournament on Aug. 2. Teens can visit Patriot Outdoors to learn about paintball at 3:30 p.m. July 8 with the program.
