Rodeo

The High Plains Junior Rodeo finals start today, all day, at the Curry County Events Center.

Volleyball

Kindergarten through eighth-grade students can participate in the Portales Rams Volleyball Camp through Wednesday at the Portales High School gym.

Kindergartners through fourth-graders are set to meet from 9-11 a.m. The cost is $25 cash and includes a T-shirt and prizes.

Fifth- through eighth-graders are scheduled to meet from noon to 3 p.m. Their cost is $35 cash and includes a T-shirt and prizes.

On this day in 1991, notorious boxer Mike Tyson rapes Desiree Washington, a contestant in the Miss Black America pageant, in an Indianapolis hotel room.

At a time when the issue of date rape was entering the country's consciousness, Tyson's attack became a national sensation.
