Roswell Noon Optimist erased an eight-run deficit with 10 in the bottom of the fifth, then scored in the seventh to edge Los Lunas Enchantment 15-14 in the second extra-inning game on the opening day of the state Majors (ages 11-12) Little League tournament at Dickenson Field.
Noon Optimist will face host Clovis Zia, the only team not to play on Saturday, in a 7 p.m. game today at Dickenson.
In earlier games on Saturday, Albuquerque Altamont overhauled Carlsbad Shorthorn 7-6 in nine innings and Rio Rancho Sunset erased a 5-0 deficit to beat Los Alamos 15-5. In the late game, Taos edged Bayard Cooper 3-1.
In a game featuring six home runs, Noon Optimist won it in the seventh when Luke Fink led off with a ground-rule double and scored as Garrison Kyser’s chopper bounced off the second baseman’s glove and into short left-center for an RBI single.
Fink and Gavin Maloney had home runs for Noon Optimist. Blaine Garley belted two homers for Enchantment, including a grand slam, while Devonte Lambert and Jason Newey each went deep once.
Shorthorn got two homers and four RBIs from Coda Duarte, but Altamont erased an early 4-0 deficit, scoring three times in the fifth for a 6-4 lead. Duarte’s second homer was part of a two-run sixth for Shorthorn which forced extra innings, but Altamont’s Derek Trujillo singled home Caesar Garcia with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
Los Alamos scored two in the first and three in the third in the second game, but Sunset tied it with five in the bottom of the third, then added three in the fourth and seven in the fifth to end it on the 10-run rule.
A two-run homer by R. Rodriguez started Sunset’s comeback in the third.
