Altrusa International

The Altrusa International, Inc. Club of Portales, met noon on Aug. 8th in the Central Annex. President Gaynelle Thomas, called the meeting to order. There were 19 members and one guest, Laura Adkins, present. Frankye King led the opening ceremonies. The minutes and treasurer’s report were approved. A thank you note was read from the Ortega family.

Donna Mowrer gave the Altrusa Accent on chemotherapy. Secret pals were thanked, and Lori Bohm drew for the Queen of Hearts.

Linda Leaming presented two names for membership and Elly Helton reported the committee has secured four homes for the Sept. 18 home tour, but need one more.

Sheryl Borden announced the club is also collecting recyclable cardboard and it can either be brought to the club meetings or taken to The Print Shop. Members were reminded to continue to bring plastic bags, egg cartons and aluminum cans. Newspapers can be taken to the ENMU Recycling center 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays and Fridays.

After the close of the business meeting, Laura Adkins told about a program that her clothing class was participating in called “Dresses for Africa.” Members brought sewing notions and fabric for the class to use.
