Two killed in crash on U.S. 70

Two people were killed Monday afternoon when a Ford Explorer collided with a privately-owned garbage truck near the Curry-Roosevelt County line on U.S. 70.

State police spokesman Sgt. Tim Johnson said a 57-year-old woman and 84-year-old man, both in the Explorer, died at the scene just before 4 p.m.

The deceased were not identified pending notification of relatives. Johnson said the vehicle is registered in Elk City, Okla.

The driver of the garbage truck was not injured, Johnson said. His name was not released on Monday.

Johnson said police investigating the crash believe the garbage truck was turning into a private driveway when it was struck from behind by the Explorer. He said no charges had been filed in connection with the crash and the investigation into the cause will continue today.
