The Environmental Management System at Cannon Air Force Base is a system aimed at achieving continual improvements in mission performance by reducing environmental risks and cost, providing methodical approaches to planning, and implementing and reviewing the impact activities have on the environment.
“The EMS is an integral part of any organizations overall management and practices,” said Jenn Collins, 27th Special Operations Civil Engineer Squadron EMS coordinator. “What most fail to realize is how encompassing EMS really is.”
EMS is required by Executive Order 13423, “Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy and Transportation Management.” The program helps reduce environmental liabilities by early identification of potential risks.
“EMS here at Cannon is focused on improving environmental impact on a continuous basis,” said Collins. “This ongoing process and its success greatly depends on how committed everyone on our installation is.”
“There are so many small steps we can all take that can directly impact the bigger picture,” said Collins. “It’s up to everyone to identify problem areas, initiate responses, monitor those corrective actions, and review progress as needed.”
