My turn: Students appreciative of veterans

I had a great time hanging out with Lindsey-Steiner fifth and sixth graders Thursday, talking to them about the lameness of Justin Bieber, the hotness of Taylor Lautner and their excitement over their Bring a Veteran to School Day, which is being held today.

Kids have changed since I was in sixth grade, but hearing their future ambitions and their new knowledge of veterans was definitely fun and inspiring. The students have also put up multiple veteran displays, which are open to the public for viewing today.

A lot of other events are also happening this weekend for Veterans Day, including a Veterans of Foreign Wars event and an American Legion event.

The Legion Post 31 will be holding its 65th Annual Veterans Day Service at 10:30 a.m. today at the Memorial Building.

The VFW Post 9515 will hold a 5K run at 10:30 a.m. and a ceremony at noon in honor of the holiday.

Also, check out the to free Eastern New Mexico University concerts being held today and Saturday. Check the Portales News-Tribune event calendar in the paper or online at http://www.pntonline.com.
