Good morning, and welcome to the first Freedom New Mexico Morning Briefing of 2012. You might be reading this from your office or your home, depending on how your business is marking the New Years holiday. The Freedom New Mexico offices are closed, but the newsrooms are still available throughout the day (depending, of course, on reporter schedules). Sports coming up: The ENMU women are at Oklahoma Panhandle State tonight, but the basketball action gets heavier the rest of the week.
Tuesday starts the annual Eastern Plains Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament. Look for a story and brackets later today on these websites and in Tuesday's newspaper.
Clovis' boys travel to Amarillo High Tuesday, while the Lady Cats host Amarillo.
The Wildcats will hit the road again Thursday against Sandia, while Portales hosts its Portales Shootout tournament over the weekend.
Slowing down: On this day in 1974, President Richard M. Nixon signs the Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act, setting a new national maximum speed limit.
Prior to 1974, individual states set speed limits within their boundaries and highway speed limits across the country ranged from 40 mph to 80 mph. But the Arab-Israeli conflict dramatically increased oil prices. As part of his response to the embargo, President Nixon signed a federal law lowering all national highway speed limits to 55 mph.
