The second session of the New Mexico state legislature opened Jan.17.
To date, 15 bills, including two emergency measures, have been introduced by area legislators.
The deadline for filing legislation is Feb.1.
The process of passing a bill
A bill that is introduced in either the house — the Senate or House of Representatives — during the legislative session is assigned to a committee that votes to pass or not pass the bill.
If the bill passes committee, it is sent to the other house for approval. The second house may choose to amend the bill and return it to the first house in a process called concurrence.
When both legislative houses agree upon a final version of the bill, it is enrolled and engrossed, or recorded.
Finally, it is sent to the Governor's desk for approval.
