Thursday morning briefing: School alerts, breakfast at the Legion and Ground Hog Day

Good morning and welcome to the Freedom New Mexico Thursday briefing.

New school alerts

Clovis Municipal Schools are now using a new Skylert Calling System as part of the district’s Student Information Management System.

Skylert enables the district to contact parents via phone, email, and text message.

Examples of system uses include student absences, low Child Nutrition account balances, and information such as a school closings or delays.

Breakfast with the Legion

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 25 breakfast is 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Legion building, 2400 W. Seventh St.

The menu includes eggs, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns, biscuits, gravy, red and green chili.

Adults $5 and children $2.50.

Kitchen tip

Stretch that box.

To make a bigger cake from a mix, add 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 cup sugar, 1 egg, 1 tsp. baking powder.

It’s a fact

You can’t tickle yourself: Go ahead. Try to tickle yourself.

Today in history

On this day in 1887, Groundhog Day, featuring a rodent meteorologist, is celebrated for the first time at Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Penn.

According to tradition, if a groundhog comes out of its hole on this day and sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter weather; no shadow means an early spring.
