Angelo State turns back Hounds

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Junior guard Keenan Coleman scored 20 points and Angelo State held Eastern New Mexico University without a field goal over a 10-minute stretch spanning both halves Wednesday night en route to a 70-62 Lone Star Conference men’s victory.

Coleman struggled from the field, going 4-for-15, but he went 10-for-10 from the free throw line as the Rams (10-13, 3-10 LSC) improved to 8-3 at home this season while dealing the Hounds their seventh loss in eight road games.

ENMU (13-9, 6-7), averaging around 76 points a game coming in, shot just 36 percent for the game, including 6-of-24 in the first half. The Greyhounds also went 6-of-26 for the game from 3-point range.

Six-foot-8 backup forward Lorenzo Freeman added 12 points and six rebounds in 11 minutes for the Rams.

ENMU got 18 points from senior guard Reggie Nelson — including 16 in the second half — while junior guard Devone Davis scored 13 points off the bench and senior post Curtis Wilkinson added 11 points and seven rebounds.

ENMU opened a 13-10 lead on two free throws by Davis with 7:41 left in the half. A basket by Wilkinson gave the Hounds their final lead at 15-14 with 6:48 to go, and was their final field goal until a jumper by Davis pulled the Hounds to 30-21 with 16:34 remaining.

Angelo led 40-27 on a layup by Justin Walling with 12:48 to go before the Hounds began to chip away. They got within 44-39 on Nelson’s 3-pointer with 8:43 left, fell behind by 11 points with six minutes to go and then pulled to 56-51 on another 3 by Nelson at the 4:09 mark.

A 3-pointer by sophomore guard Kyle Lantz and senior guard Tralyn Harden’s layup with two minutes to go made it 60-57, but Coleman converted six consecutive free throws in an 18-second span during the final minute to keep the Hounds at bay.
