Club notes - Feb. 19

Daughters of the American Revolution

The El Portal Chapter of the DAR met at the First Christian Church in Clovis on Feb. 12. After regent Pam Wallace led the opening rituals, the business meeting was postponed so that the winners of the essay contest could read their essay and be given their awards. Eighth-grade winner was Kynzi Creighton from Elida. Her essay about the war of 1812 focused on Dolly Madison, whose brave actions helped to preserve a famous portrait of George Washington as well as important documents and records. Reagan Truex, also from Elida was the seventh-grade winner. Her essay told of the importance of Andrew Jackson during the war of 1812. Kaylee Muse from the Clovis Christian School was the sixth-grade essay winner. She read her essay, which was written from the perspective of three young children during the war of 1812. Each essay winner was awarded a medal and certificate.

Clovis BPO Does

Clovis BPO Does held a meeting on Feb. 9 with president Sandie Kitchens presiding.

The Drove voted to make a $50 donation to the Dogs for the Deaf in memoriam of past supreme president Peggy Long. The Drove also voted to donate $200 to the Portales VFW for T-shirts for their upcoming 10K Run with proceeds benefiting local veterans. Member Sammye May also made a personal donation to this charity.

Carolyn DeWeese presented the 2012 proposed budget, which was approved by the membership. Linda Catanzaro read a letter proposing Bea Martel for life membership. The letter will be read again at the next meeting when the members will vote on this proposal. An application for membership for Marsha Russell was read and approved. Conductor Martha Aldrich announced the dates for the upcoming ritual practices.

We will have initiation of new members at the next meeting on Feb. 23.

Portales Woman's Club

Portales Woman's Club met on Feb. 7 with vice president Patrice Tompkins presiding. The pledges were led by Jan Smartnick, Beth Davis led the Club Collect and Amber Hamilton gave the invocation.

Tompkins reminded members of the annual Women's Day Out event, which is scheduled for April 21 and asked members to sign up to deliver Meals on Wheels.

Two board recommendations were approved: To donate $50 to the ENMU Science Fair and to give $10 toward a gift for the outgoing state GFWC NM president. Dianne Parker gave the Historical Moment. The following members were elected to serve on the nominating committee: Sheryl Borden, Esther Bargas, Wanda Pettus, Amber Hamilton and Jan Smartnick. Borden, Della Kobernick, Lois Crozier and Iris Johnson volunteered to serve on the reception committee for the in-coming state president at the Ruidoso convention in April.

The next meeting will be on March 14.

Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts

The Cub and Boy Scouts of America is hosting a "BSA Birthday" noon on Feb. 25 at Oasis State Park. Lunch is stew cooked in the open. A $5 park-entrance fee will be collected at lunch. At 4:30 p.m. a cross-over ceremony is scheduled. During the ceremony, Cub Scouts transition into Boy Scouts.

The club is also hosting a pine wood derby 10 a.m. on March 3 at the Burns Do It Center on Prince Street. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and their family members are eligible to enter the contest.

Applications to join the scouts will be available at both events.

Education Retirees

Curry County Association of Education Retirees (CCAER) met Feb. 5 at Furr's Cafeteria. Jackye Alexander led the pledges to the American and New Mexico flags. Bill Reid opened the meeting with prayer. Faye Pittman introduced Margaret Hinchee, Clovis Carver librarian, who presented the program about the library. She had a slide show of all sections of the library. These include fiction, non-fiction, biography, southwest collection, children, genealogy, reference and young adult.

Residents of Curry County and surrounding areas may obtain a library card. It is free. Jackye Alexander conducted the business meeting. Minutes by Sandra Bates and treasurer's report by Lynda Miburn were approved.

Mart Hastain gave a benevolence report. Delman Shirley gave the legislative and EBB reports. Pam Wallace reported there are 263 local members of which 149 have state dues withdrawn at state level.

February birthdays were recognized. Door prizes of lots of chocolates were awarded.

Next meeting will be March 5.

Encanto Garden Club

Encanto Garden Club met Feb. 8 at the New Mexico Visitors Center on U.S. 60-70-84 for the purpose of getting ideas for a memorial for deceased member, Bess Kline.

Gallery Fifteen was the setting for Encanto's Founder's Day celebration, the group honored president Helen Martinez with a birthday gift. The meeting concluded with a door prize auction.
