Forecast: NM should brace for warm, windy spring

ALBUQUERQUE — Forecasters with the National Weather Service say patterns are suggesting New Mexico is in for another warm, windy and dry spring.

The prediction came Thursday as water managers, agricultural experts and forecasters met to discuss the state's drought situation.

Last year marked one of the driest years on record for New Mexico, and nearly a quarter of the state is still experiencing extreme to exceptional drought.

The difference is New Mexico is in a better position heading into the spring thanks to significant snowfall in December and more dustings in the mountains this month.

February has seen near normal amounts of snow and rain, but officials expect the moisture to taper off and begin evaporating.

Meteorologist Ed Polasko says forecasters are now watching for spring storms, potential hot spots for fire danger and top wind gusts.
