Barnes and Noble taking over CCC bookstore

The Clovis Community College bookstore will be managed by one of the largest book retailers in the country come April 9.

Lisa Spencer, director of marketing and community relations at CCC, said the change in management will save CCC money in the long run. She said savings will be passed on to students.

Barnes and Noble was selected from among four bids.

"Barnes and Noble offered more options than other vendors," Spencer said. "We're just excited for them to come on board."

Jacque Ochs, director of auxiliary services at CCC as well as the bookstore manager, said the change in management comes after administration examined the services the bookstore offered and made a request for contract management.

Barnes and Noble will offer services to students such as textbook rentals, e-books, laptop computers and improved web services, according to Ochs.

Ochs said plans are to keep all three part-time student employee positions at the store.

Chris Isham, a part-time student employee at CCC bookstore for more than two years, thinks textbook rentals will benefit students most.

"Give us a chance to show you what the new store's going to look like," said Ochs "and try to be patient because it's not going to happen right away. It is a work in progress."

Ochs said store shelves are being reset to create a different floor plan.

Ochs said a major remodel to include new paint and carpet will take place in the summer. She said the new shop will include a more extensive snack area, which will offer soft drinks.

"The few plans that I've seen show a little seating area that will allow you to visit with friends. But I don't know if that will happen right away either. It could be in the summer remodel."
