Hounds snap five-game skid

PLAINVIEW, Texas — Junior third baseman Sam Hedrick hit a go-ahead, two-run single with two out in the third inning and Eastern New Mexico University never looked back en route to a 10-4 win over Wayland Baptist on Tuesday.

The Greyhounds (12-22) snapped a five-game losing streak and pounded out a season-high 21 hits against the Pioneers, led by Brooke Brooks, Daniel Binz and Derek Crenshaw with three apiece. Crenshaw belted his first home run of the season, a leadoff shot to left field in the seventh for a 6-2 lead.

Hedrick, who went 2-for-5, also hit a run-scoring single in the second inning, while senior first baseman Mitch Wolfe had a pair of RBI doubles.

The teams combined to use 11 pitchers — five by ENMU — and strand 27 basrerunners — 15 by the Hounds — in a 3 1/2-hour marathon.

The Pioneers (13-30) pulled to 7-4 in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out, two-run single by second baseman Calvin Bass, but ENMU pulled away in the ninth on an RBI single by Brandon Devries, Wolfe's run-scoring double and an RBI single by Joe Huwer.

Senior right-hander Jas Shergill (1-0) worked 3 1/3 shutout innings in relief of starter Ryan Boydstun for the win.

ENMU is 30-26 all-time against the Pioneers and has won the last three meetings.
