ROSWELL — Except for senior Ethan Peterson, the Clovis High boys golf team didn't have the kind of day it had hoped for on Tuesday.
Peterson overtook Hobbs senior Kenneth Fadke for medalist honors, shooting a 1-under-par 70 at Spring River Golf Course for a two-day total of even-par 143, but the Wildcats struggled to a 321 team total and finished 17 strokes behind the Eagles, with whom they were tied at 304 after Monday's opening round at the New Mexico Military Golf Course.
The Clovis High girls shot 375 on Monday at NMMI to finish sixth at 751. Texico was 10th in the 12-team field at 401-372 — 773.
ROSWELL — While the Clovis boys had four players in the 70s on Monday, no one reached that mark on Tuesday except for Peterson.
Fullerton said Peterson needed just 27 putts to complete his round, but had to scramble off the tee. Fadke shot a 74 on Tuesday to take second at 145.
The Cats and Eagles have gone back and forth this spring, but Fullerton said his squad needs to turn it up when playing their District 4-5A rivals.
"About halfway around the Hobbs coach was saying that his guys weren't playing very good," CHS boys coach Cal Fullerton said. "Them not playing good and us not playing good are two different things.
"When they don't play good, that's when we need to play better. They're probably a little more talented overall than we are."
Sophomore Matt Justus was second for the Cats at 157, shooting 40-41 — 81 on Tuesday while senior Sam Bridgwater came in at 161 after a 42-43 — 85.
Deming ran away with the girls team title at 643, 55 strokes ahead of runnerup Portales.
Junior Haley Berry led the Lady Wildcats, shooting 43-43 — 86 on Tuesday for a 173 total. Junior Kristin Bradley followed at 189, going 48-49 — 97 in the second round.
For Texico, junior Laura McFarden shot 44-41 — 85 to finish at 181 and sophomore Megan Long went 43-48 — 91 for a total of 184.
