Mustangs hand Hounds 10-4 loss

Right fielder Steven Rodriguez hit a two-run single to put University of the Southwest in front for good and the Mustangs went on to a 10-4 victory over Eastern New Mexico University on Tuesday at Greyhound Field.

Rodriguez went 3-for-3 with a walk as USW (17-26) put together a 14-hit attack. Center fielder and leadoff man Derelle Owens hit a solo homer in the sixth and a run-scoring double in the ninth.

Alfonso Alonzo (3-1), the second of four Mustangs pitchers, earned the win, allowing two hits and striking out three in two innings.

Senior designated hitter Mitch Wolfe pounded his third home run of the season leading off the ENMU eighth, pulling the Greyhounds (12-26) to within 7-4. But Southwest pulled away with three runs and four hits in the top of the ninth.

Junior right-hander Chris Bataska (0-3), making his first start of the season after 11 relief appearances, carried a 2-1 lead into the fifth before the Mustangs knocked him out with three runs. Joshua Capello hit a one out double and scoring on Ysidoro Reyna's single to right, and Carlos Rodriguez followed with a single.

Both runners moved up on a wild pitch and Adan Martinez walked before Steven Rodriguez lined a two-run single to left to make it 4-2.

It was the final home game of the season for ENMU, which wraps up its schedule with Lone Star Conference series at Texas A&M-Kingsville this weekend and at West Texas A&M April 27-29.
