Doll sculpting featured on program

Information on making sculpted dolls, sewing with stretch knits and fabric applique will be the featured topics on "Creative Living" 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday and noon on Thursday. (All times are Mountain.)

Author and doll maker, Terese Cato has been making sculpted dolls for years. She will show how to embellish a handmade doll so that its character comes alive and helps to tell her story. Her book is titled "Make Cloth Dolls. A Foolproof Way to Sew Fabric Friends." She lives in North Las Vegas.

Laura Keith is the owner of Laura Keith Apparel Design, and she's going to talk about sewing with stretch knits which all include spandex content. The main thing to consider is how much the fabric stretches as this will determine what kind and size of pattern to use and how the garment will fit. Keith is from Vancouver, Wash.

Karen Eckmeier owns The Quilted Lizard, and she's going to show a new series of patterns which use a paper backed fusible for easy appliqué, and she will also show how she combines floral, fauna and critters to create a kaleidoscope design. She's from Kent, Conn.

Information on breadmaking and elder abuse will be the featured topics on "Creative Living" noon on Tuesday and 2 p.m. on Saturday. (All times are Mountain.)

Glenna Vance, Lesaffre Yeast Corp., will demonstrate making bread in several of the new bread machines on the market, which have unique features that have caused a renewed interest in using them. Vance is from Milwaukee.

Thomas Lee, elder attorney for Senior Resources of America, will discuss the dramatic increase in elder abuse and explain how recognizing this can be an overwhelming challenge for family members. He will talk about "red flags" that signal possible abuse. Lee is from West Hills, Calif.

Bread sticks

  • 1 cup water
  • 2 Tbsp. shortening
  • 2 1/4 to 2 3/4 cups bread flour
  • 2 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2 1/4 tsp. Active Dry Yeast

Topping

  • 1 Egg white, slightly beaten
  • 1 Tbsp. water
  • 3-4 Tbsp. poppy or sesame seeds

In large mixer bowl, combine 1 cup flour, yeast, sugar, and salt; mix well. In saucepan, heat water and shortening until very warm (120 degrees – 130 degrees Fahrenheit; shortening does not need to melt). Add to flour mixture. Blend at low speed until moistened; beat 3 minutes at medium speed. By hand, gradually stir in enough remaining flour to make a soft dough. Knead on floured surface until smooth and elastic, 5 to 8 minutes. Place dough in lightly oiled bowl and turn to grease top. Cover; let rise until dough tests ripe. Punch down dough. Divide into 4 parts. Divide each fourth into 6 pieces. On lightly floured surface, roll each piece to an 8-inch rope. Place on greased cookie sheets. Combine egg white and water; brush tops of bread sticks. Sprinkle with poppy or sesame seed. Cover; let rise in warm place until indentation remains after touching. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes until deep golden brown. Remove from cookie sheets; cool. NOTE: You can substitute Instant (fast-rising) yeast in place of Active Dry Yeast. When using Instant Yeast, expect your dough to rise faster. Always let your dough rise until ripe. Traditional methods: use equal amounts; Bread Machine: use 1/2 teaspoon Instant Yeast OR 3/4 teaspoon Active Dry Yeast per cup of flour in your recipe. This recipe makes 24 bread sticks.
