Four tribute artists, local country singer lined up for music festival

Four tribute artists and a budding local country artist will join rock 'n' roll legend Chubby Checker in the entertainment lineup for the 2012 Clovis Musical Festival.

The 25th annual festival is Sept. 7-9.

Randy Petty, music festival chairman, announced Wednesday singer-songwriter Will Banister and the Mulberry Band will be the opening act when the festival concerts kick off Friday.

Tribute artists scheduled to perform that night are:

  • Jerry Lee Lewis by Darrell Croy
  • Ritchie Valens by Ray Anthony
  • Buddy Holly by Johnny Rogers

Petty said a Roy Orbison tribute artist is not yet under contract.

Saturday's lineup includes the original Fireballs, who recorded the song "Sugar Shack" at Norman Petty studio in 1963 and Checker, whose hit song "The Twist" topped music charts in 1961.

The musical events will be held at Curry County Events Center, which will feature a dance floor for the occasion.

The festival was started by Vi Petty in 1987 to celebrate the rock 'n' roll heritage of Clovis and Norman Petty Recording Studios. It also marks the 50th anniversary of Checker's iconic hit.

The festival committee hopes to hold a children's concert in conjunction with the festival featuring award winning children's musician Andy Mason of Portales.

The festival will include tours of the Norman Petty Recording Studio and a gospel sing-along on Sunday.
