Heat sets record

A Portales sandwich shop saw its busiest day in the past few months Wednesday thanks to customers coming in to beat the record heat.

Iced coffee drinks and ice cream were the popular menu items for the Do Drop In, with fruit salad as a close third.

"Everyone associates the weather with healthy food," owner Ian Mountjoy said.

The temperature climbed to 98 degrees in Portales and 96 degrees in Clovis in what has already been a warmer than average month.

The previous record for Portales and Clovis for April 25 was 93 degrees in 1927.

The hottest April day recorded in records that date back to 1910 was 99 degrees in 1936.

In Clovis, Lewis Carter said he enjoyed fresh fruit after working on a bookcase for his home office in the heat.

"I turned on the air conditioner and stayed in the house," Lewis said.

Ranchvale Elementary teacher, Felicia Perry, said she also stayed inside for recess with her classroom even though the heat didn't faze her students.

The forecast for today calls for highs in the lower 90s, with temperatures gradually declining into the 70s over the weekend.
