Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Class profiles: Melrose High School

Melrose High School made history this year, when Kendra Jacobs and Misha Riley received Pursuing Victory with Honor scholarships.

It was the first time in New Mexico Activities Association scholarship history that two recipients were chosen from the same school.

The scholarship is awarded to athletes and students involved in school and community activities.

Melrose school Superintendent Jamie Widner, who graduated from Melrose High School 30 years ago, said "The traditional approach hasn't changed much since I graduated."

Widner said the school focuses on stringent academics, sports and participates in three national trade organizations.

Widner said several other students have received scholarships and he is "Extremely proud of the whole group."

We asked Melrose's 16 seniors to answer the question: If you could be featured on the cover of a magazine, which one would it be? What would your interview be about? Who would interview you?

July Allen

"Pro-Rodeo Sport News" — I love to rodeo and would love to be the role model for young kids one day. I hope to make the National Finals Rodeo or have a close family member make it. My interview would be about my experience at the NFR and I would love to have Jerrad Hofstetter do my interview; he has been like my rodeo coach the past few years and is a huge role model in my life.

Josh Broome

"Game Informer" — It would be for becoming the youngest, most competitive professional gamer in the world. My interviewer would be Husky (also known as Husky StarCraft on his Youtube channel)

Aaron Dearing

"ESPN The Magazine" — My interview would be about baseball and me being an up and coming star. I would be interviewed by Tim Kurkjian and Terry Francona.

Cassidy Doherty

"Sports Illustrated" — It would be on because that would mean I would have attained fame for my love for the game of basketball. I would be interviewed by Dick Vitale, on the topic of who is the better college basketball team, North Carolina or Duke. Of course, I would argue the point of North Carolina!

Kelsey Draper

"People Magazine" — for saving a multitude of people's lives because that's what I want to do with my life. I would have Katie Couric interview me.

Craig Felland

"Rolling Stone" — because it focuses on music. I would like Lil Wayne to interview me and we would discuss hip-hop music.

Kamron Huber

"Sports Illustrated"— It would have a picture of me playing second base and making a legendary catch for Melrose High School. The interview would be about how I have dealt with my Crohn's disease while playing sports and how I have accomplished many goals in my life even though I have had rough patches throughout my high school career. The person who would be interviewing me would be Tim Lencicum because he is a great pitcher and one of my idols.

Kendra Jacobs, Valedictorian

"OT Practice Magazine" — Since I am planning to earn a degree in occupational therapy, being on the cover of an occupational therapy magazine would be a great achievement. My interview would be about my contributions of new, innovative therapy techniques.

Daniel Lyons

"Time Magazine" — for my recent discovery in astronomy. I would want to be interviewed by Larry King from CNN. My interview would be about my discovery of an Earth-like planet that could be habitable for the human race.

Dylan Pareo

"Diesel Tech Magazine" — and be interviewed by their CEO. I would like to discuss my winning their magazine's competition — a brand new truck. We would then discuss how I would like it customized, what I would do with my new truck and my appreciation for winning it.

Wyatt Payne

"Outdoor Life" — because I enjoy outdoor activities, like hunting and fishing. I would like to be interviewed by Bill Dance and we would discuss game and fishing.

Tyan Ray

"Rolling Stone" — for being a famous music artist because I love music. It would be awesome if someone was interviewing me someday about the music I created and how I got there.

Misha Riley

"Time Magazine" — because it is a well-known and respectable magazine. I think my interview would be about my work with the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life and the numerous State and National Awards my FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) chapter has won over the past six years.

I believe I would choose Robin Roberts from Good Morning America because she herself has battled cancer and would understand the effort that Relay volunteers are making to raise money to discover a cure for cancer ultimately.

Chase Sneller

"Diesel Performance Magazine" — because I enjoy discussing diesel trucks and their technology.

Nick Spatafore

"Sports Illustrated" — My interview would be about the MLB draft and being the projected number one pick. I would be interviewed by Tim Kurkjian.

Lance Widner

"American Livestock"— magazine because it would show my many contributions in livestock production of beef and swine. I would want to be interviewed by their top reporter, Jeanine Mensch.
