Every time I drive by the building where the pizza place used to be I chuckle. I still find it amazing that they packed everything up and moved out practically overnight last fall. I'm not mentioning the pizza place by name because you know how folks are, we live in such a litigious world these days.
I remember when I found out the pizza place had left town I went online to try to get more information. It looked like the Giant Pizza Corporation had done the same thing in some little towns about our size in Texas, Idaho, California and other states.
"They didn't say a word, they just shut it down," I said to The
Lady of the House as we drove by the empty store. "Why didn't they announce it?"
"Did you want a handwritten note addressed to you?" she asked.
"Well that would be nice..."
"I'm holding up my 'SARCASM' sign here," said The Lady of the House.
"I know that, but maybe a notice in the paper. Maybe a goodbye sale, you know, 'FREE PIZZA SATURDAY AS WE SAY SO LONG TO THE HIGH PLAINS.' We would've told them how much we enjoyed their pizza over the years."
"Well, they must have needed to leave in a hurry," said The Lady of the House.
"But why?" I said. "Why didn't they tell us why?"
"Because maybe it's none of your business?" said The Lady of the House. "Maybe it was because of the economy or maybe mismanagement at some level. Whatever the reason, and I say this as nicely as I can, it's really none of your business."
We drove along in silence for a few moments.
"Well I guess you're right," I said. "I never thought about that."
"That's why we get along so well," said The Lady of the House,
smiling as we drove on down the street.
