Editor's note: Amos is a churchmouse, who types by hurling himself at the keys, but he can't use the capital shift keys, and he shuns punctuation marks - except hyphens and dashes.
a tribute to amos s mom
boss i was searching for
kite string the other day
for my little niece annie
marie when i stumbled
across some old photos
of me and mom
there i was dressed up
like the lone raider
you remember him boss
the masked mouse who
rode his matchstick
horse for cheese and
justice for all
and there was mom
with a bandana on her
head flour specks in
her hair koolaid and
a mop in her hand and
a weary look in her eyes
although i can t imagine
why boss i was such a
model little mouse
don t you know
looking at that picture
now boss she looks like
an absolute angel with
heaven s dust in her hair
and that bandana halo
around her gentle head
of course with mother s
day just around the bend
a poetic muse settled
over my little mousy
brain - and no it doesn t
resemble a glassy-eyed
stare or a dazed fog
as you so thoughtfully
suggested yesterday
over doughnut crumbs
and coffee -
at any rate with kind
thoughts fond memories
and a heartful of love
here s a poem for mom
my love for you
more than a wish
deep as a prayer
gentle as a dove
i remember your
tender touch
upon my fevered brow
your loving care
even when i was down
that love at times
difficult to express
impossible to define
yet always there
ready to share
in some subtle way
a son s heartfelt care
for his mom so fair
on this her special day
amos
p s - all right boss i know
you re going to tease me
about mush again
but it s mother s day
okay - some traditions
just shouldn t be tampered
with - mothers and cheesecake
are two of them
