Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Clovis High School athletic director Brian Stacy has resigned, according to Clovis Municipal Schools Superintendent Terry Myers.
Wildcats varsity baseball coach Drew Hatley also resigned his baseball position, but will retain his positions as a social studies teacher and assistant football coach, Myers said.
Myers said resignations from both were received on Friday. He would not say if Hatley and Stacy were asked to resign, only that "they had all of the options that any employee has," and declined to elaborate.
Myers did not give details on what led to the resignations. Attempts to contact Stacy for comment were unsuccessful. Hatley declined comment Monday afternoon.
"It was a student disciplinary issue; that's all I'll be able to discuss," Myers said. "When we make decisions here, we try to make them in the best interests of the students and the district."
Myers would not give details on the disciplinary issue. In response to a question, he said law enforcement had not been involved.
A petition circulating on change.org asks Myers to reconsider the decisions, and said the incident stems from an event during Clovis' April 27 trip to District 4-5A rival Carlsbad.
The petition was created by Robin Kuykendall of Clovis.
"While the events that led to the decision to ask these two to resign were egregious, this could have happened anywhere and on anyone's watch," the petition reads. "It was the irresponsible decision of a player that caused this event to take place. Irresponsible decisions of a (minor) should not be blamed on a coach and athletic director. (Stacy and Hatley) did not do anything heinous, yet are being punished as if they did it themselves. Their actions after the fact show that they neither supported this player's actions nor condoned it. Yet they are being held responsible. We adamantly oppose the decision and ask you to reconsider."
Stacy was hired in November 2005. He was the school's cross country coach and volunteer track coach at the time. His 2011-12 salary was $71,938.
The Wildcats finished this season 10-17, their first under Hatley. His stipend as baseball coach was $4,070.
Both positions are advertised as open on the CMS website.
