Editor's note: The name of the victim in this story has been removed from the initial report. Court records obtained the day after this story was published show the victim was sexually assaulted, information not previously available. The Clovis News Journal does not routinely name victims of sexual assault.

Clovis' Paul Villanueva, 23, was the man shot by a Clovis police officer Wednesday evening while fleeing a residence on Sheldon Street, police said.

According to a press release from the District Attorney's office, Villanueva was listed in "critical yet stable" condition at a Texas medical facility Thursday afternoon.

Villanueva was shot once, officials said. The name of the officer involved in the shooting has not been released.

Police records show officers responded about 6 p.m. to 1121 Sheldon St. for a situation check. The shooting occurred a short time later.

Neighbor Tiffany Bolin said she was in her back yard when she saw a man with a gun come running out the back door of the residence.

She said she heard officers tell the man "put it down and get down" and heard two shots. She said she saw the man fall to the ground and heard him moaning.

Sundae Bolin, mother of Tiffany, said shortly before the shooting she saw a woman come running out of the front door of the house.

The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on standard administrative leave pending the investigation, according to the press release.

Officials will release more information, including what criminal charges may be filed, at an 11 a.m. press conference today at the Clovis Carver Library.

Clovis Police Capt. Patrick Whitney said the last officer-involved shooting within Clovis city limits was in 2002 on Upsilon Street and Grand Avenue. A Clovis police officer was shot in the arm by a suspect during a drug warrant raid and officers returned fire on the suspect, who was seriously injured.
