My turn: Father's visit sparks flashback

I experienced deja vu this weekend.

My father came to visit me but he was here just five months ago dropping me off to start my life as an adult after college. I'll spare you the tears by saying we're quite the odd couple at times. But I did get emotional when he left because he, too, like my brother, is a piece of home.

Our second New Mexico adventure began in Albuquerque on Friday. While there, we stayed with old friends of his, whom I haven't seen since I was 4.

I'd pick their gorgeous house and generous hospitality over a hotel any day. After a day in Albuquerque, we went on to Santa Fe.

My father was unimpressed by the high prices and rude tourists. Santa Fe just felt like hipster city to me.

We left for Portales on Sunday and my father kept remarking how the drive felt so familiar. He remembered going through Fort Sumner, Melrose and Floyd during our two-day drive from San Francisco in December. He said he felt like he left me just yesterday.

I felt the same way, but I'd like to think that so much has changed since then.

It's funny how the smallest things can take you back to a place where such a pivotal change occurred in your life.
