Commissioners OK fireworks ban

At a special meeting for the Roosevelt County Commission Tuesday, commissioners approved a resolution limiting the sale and use of fireworks within the county.

Portales Fire Department Chief Gary Nuckols said according to state statute, counties and municipalities have the authority to ban all aerial devices and ground-audible devices.

He said such devices are also banned by the city of Portales.

Aerial devices banned by the city and the county include the following:

  • Aerial shell kit-reloadable tubes
  • Aerial spinners
  • Helicopters
  • Mines
  • Missile-type rockets
  • Multiple tube devices
  • Roman candles
  • Shells
  • Stick-type rockets

Ground audible devices banned by the city and the county include the following:

  • Chasers
  • Firecrackers

The following are fireworks which are allowed to be sold and used within the city and county:

  • Ground and hand-held sparkling devices
  • Cone fountains
  • Crackling devices
  • Cylindrical fountains
  • Flitter sparklers
  • Ground spinners
  • Illuminating torches
  • Wheels
