The sounds of country and western and bluegrass gospel bands from Texas and the local area will fill Portales City Park on Friday and Saturday as part of Heritage Days.

According to Steve Davis, music organizer of Heritage Days, the following musical performances will take place. Roosevelt County musicians will sing country music in the Christian country jamboree. Davis said local musicians, many of who have been associated with the Floyd Country Jamboree, will perform in the local country music show. Davis said the shows will feature mostly singing but also a bit of instrumentation.
Bluegrass gospel bands scheduled to perform are Pecos Valley, From the Heartland and Hanks and Company.
"It's always excellent music," Davis said. "If you don't bring a lawn chair and come sit and listen for a while you're missing out."
Linda Brown, a local farmer from Floyd, will deliver an hour and a half country and western musical performance with her band Random Strangers. Brown said her band's performance is informal and that many of the performers meet for the first time at Heritage Days.
"I just call some different people I know and we get together and see what happens," said Brown, who plays bass and sings for the band. "We do it kind of like a jam session."
Brown said she has orchestrated a Random Strangers performance at Heritage Days for at least five years. She said she enjoys performing for a hometown group where members of the audience often know band members and request songs.
Eddie Hanks will perform with his band from Seymour, Texas, for the fourth year on Saturday. The band's bluegrass gospel performance will last an hour. Hanks said he enjoys performing in small towns because of the warm audience.
"It seems like everywhere we go there's always somebody there that will hear a song that reminded them of their grandparents or their parents," said Hanks, who plays the banjo and mandolin and also sings. "It touches somebody and when they tell us stories like that it actually touches us as well."
