Fishing report - June 27

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Cabresto Lake: The lake and campground closed May 14 and will stay closed for about six months while the dam is being rebuilt.

Charette Lakes: Fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, small spinners, jigs and worms for trout and perch. The water was very clear.

Cimarron River: Hot spot for trout: Fishing continued to be very good using olive elk hair caddis, stone flies, yellow and orange stimulators, black prince nymphs, spinners and salmon eggs for trout. The stone fly activity was a bit spotty. Water flow below Eagle Nest Lake as of Monday was 55 cfs.

Clayton Lake: Hot spot for trout: Fishing was very good using Power Bait and homemade dough bait for limits of trout. A feww walleye and largemouth bass were taken by anglers using spinners and crank baits. We had no reports on other species. Due to low water conditions, only small boats, kayaks and canoes can be launched.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, grubs, bottom-bouncer nightcrawler combinations and sassy shad for walleye. Fishing was fair using crank baits, sassy shad, grubs and spinners for white bass. Fishing was slow to fair using top water lures, tubes, jerk baits, senkos and crank baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using stink bait, liver, homemade dough baits and nightcrawlers for catfish. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the low 70s.The steep north side boat ramp is open.

Coyote Creek: Trout fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs, Power Bait, bead-head hares ears and elk hair caddis for trout.

Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was good using worms and jigs for perch. Anglers were doing best from boats as the grass line along the edge of the lake was hampering bank fishing in some areas. Fishing was good trolling small spoons, Panther Martins, Z Rays, double whammies and Pistol Petes for trout and kokanee. Fishing was slow to fair using swim baits, Kastmasters, Daredevles and Krocadile spoons for northern pike.

Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, homemade dough bait, Pistol Petes and elk hair caddis.

Los Pinos: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait, spinners and copper John Barrs.

Maxwell Lake 13: The water was quite low and fishing was slow for all species.

Monastery Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, cheese, small spinners and Pistol Petes.

Morphy Lake: Fishing was fair using Power Bait, homemade dough baits, Pistol Petes and cheese.

Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 41 cfs. Trout fishing was good using copper John Barrs, stimulators, prince nymphs, worms and salmon eggs.

Red River: Water flow below the hatchery was 62 cfs. Trout fishing was good using poundmeisters, stimulators, copper John Barrs, small spinners and salmon eggs.

Rio Costilla: Trout fishing was good using parachute adams, elk hair caddis and PMDs.

Rio Grande: The water flow Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 242 cfs. Trout fishing was good in the early morning and late evening hours using bead-head hares ears, elk hair caddis, size 10 copper John Barrs and orange and yellow stimulators. Raul Archuleta and his buddy, Toby Suazo, fished below the Orilla Verde Recreation area and caught several browns and rainbows. They were using wooly buggers and bead-head prince nymphs. We had no reports on other species.

Rio Hondo: Water flow near Valdez on Monday was 25 cfs. Trout fishing was very good using elk hair caddis and mayfly nymphs in the morning and evening hours.

Shuree Ponds: Closed for the season. Opens July 1.

Springer Lakes: Fishing was slow for all species. The water was low and quite murky.

Storrie Lake: Fishing was fair using Power Bait, cheese and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing was slow to fair using liver and stink bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Ute Lake: Fishing continued to be very good using worms for bluegill. Fishing was good using stink bait in shallow water for catfish. Fishing was fair to good using jigs and grubs in submerged trees for walleye. A few big fish were taken by anglers using crank baits in shallow water. Fishing was slow to fair using creature baits, tubes, senkos, crank baits and topwater lures for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing for white bass was sporadic with a few taken by anglers trolling crank baits. Fishing for crappie was slow. The surface water temp on the main lake was in the high 60s and low 70s.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bonito Lake: The lake and surrounding area are closed to fishing due to the fire in the area. Check for updates in later reports.

Bosque Redondo: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bottomless Lakes: Fishing was slow for all species.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Grindstone Reservoir: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait, cheese, Pistol Petes and salmon eggs.

Jal Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Lake Van: Fishing was slow for all species.

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Pecos River: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 133 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Perch Lake: Fishing was slow.

Ruidoso River: Water flow at Hollywood on Monday was 4 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was good using crank baits, curly tail grubs, tubes, minnows and sassy shad for walleye. Fishing was fair using minnows at night for crappie. Fishing was fair using cut bait, chicken liver and stink bait for catfish. A water release is scheduled to begin June 27. The release will total 4,000 acre feet which is expected to reduce the boat ramp to one lane.

Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using minnows and crank baits for walleye. A few catfish were taken by anglers using chicken liver and cut bait. We had no reports on other species. The only boat ramp accessible at this time is the east-side ramp.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was fair to good trolling stick baits, crank baits and bottom-bouncer nightcrawler rigs for walleye. Fishing was fair using Pop Rs, jerk baits, tubes and crank baits for smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using homemade dough bait and chicken liver for catfish. The best catfish reports came from anglers fishing at night. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the mid to high 60s.

Animas River: As of Monday morning flow near Cedar Hill was 415 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using Panther Martins, nightcrawlers, San Juan worms and salmon eggs.

Bluewater Lake: The surface water temp hit 70 degrees over the weekend. Recommend releasing short fish as soon as possible to keep them healthy and a big catch for the future. Tiger musky fishing was very good with numerous fish in the 23 to 35 inch range caught and released. Anglers did well using perch colored glass husky jerks, orange Rapalas, swim baits and large spinners. Fishing for trout and catfish was slow.

Canjilon Lakes: Trout fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait, Pistol Petes, salmon eggs, spinners and worms.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 969 cfs and 1,210 cfs respectively. Trout fishing below El Vado was fair using nightcrawlers, salmon eggs, Power Bait and parachute adams. Fishing below Abiquiu was slow.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was good using spinners, jigs and crank baits for white bass. Fishing was fair using tubes, topwater lures and crank baits for smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using stink bait, hot dogs and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

El Vado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Fenton Lake: Fishing was good using worms, salmon eggs, cheese, Pistol Petes and wooly buggers for trout. Anglers did best fishing early and late in the day.

Heron Lake: Fishing for kokanee was good. Anglers reported catching limits trolling assorted spinners and small spoons tipped with white corn and trolled at a depth of 18 to 21 feet. Fishing from the bank was slow to fair using corn and Power Bait for trout and a few kokanee.

Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters: Water flow on the Jemez as of Monday morning was 4.4 cfs. Trout fishing on the Cebolla was good using copper John Barrs, worms and salmon eggs. On the East Fork fishing was fair using elk hair caddis, copper John Barrs and salmon eggs. The Valles Caldera opened for fishing this past Saturday. Anglers interested in fishing the San Antonio or East Fork on the Valles Caldera should go to http://www.vallescaldera.gov.

Laguna del Campo: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait, Pistol Petes and spinners. This is a special trout water open to anglers age 14 years or under, 65 years and older, handicapped anglers or up to 2 parents/guardians in direct supervision of a child or children age 14 years or younger who is fishing. This water was formerly known as Burn s Canyon Lake.

Lake Farmington: Fishing was slow for all species.

Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

McGaffey Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Navajo Lake: Hot spot for crappie: Fishing continued to be very good using small jigs and small tubes for crappie. Mark Medina reported excellent crappie fishing. He was using 1/16-ounce jigs. Fishing was slow to fair using jerk baits, minnows, buzz baits, tubes, baby brush hogs and grubs for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Lonnie Garrison caught a 19-inch smallmouth and Judy Brittain caught a 16.5-inch smallmouth. Both fish were caught up the San Juan arm on minnows. Fishing was fair trolling Arnies, double whammies and wedding rings tipped with corn in the Francis Canyon area for kokanee. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the high 60s.

Ramah Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Gregorio Lake: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes, Power Bait, Gulp eggs and salmon eggs.

San Juan: Water flow below Navajo Lake as of Monday morning was 992 cfs. Flows may remain close to 1,000 cfs for several days to provide sufficient flow for endangered species downstream. Trout fishing in the Quality Waters was good using Griffith s gnats, foam wing emergers, WD40s, small bead-head pheasant tails, San Juan worms and dead chickens. Fishing through the bait waters was good using nightcrawlers, Power Bait, spinners, wooly buggers, hoppers, copper John Barrs and jerk baits.

Santa Cruz Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes, Power Bait, garlic cheese and corn salmon egg combinations. We had no reports on other species.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: This water is open to fishing for youth under the age of 12 and an excellent place to take youngsters and get them interested in fishing. The pond is well stocked to offer youngsters a great fishing experience.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Central Pond was slow to fair using homemade dough bait and liver for catfish. Fishing was fair using worms for bluegill. We had no reports on other species. Fishing at the Catch-and-Release Pond was slow.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: Fishing was generally slow but there were a few catfish taken on liver and dough bait.

Bill Evans Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, topwater lures, sassy shad and spinner minnow combinations for white bass. Fishing was fair using crank baits and bottom bouncer night crawler combinations for walleye. Fishing was fair using chicken liver, cut bait and stink baits for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Elephant Butte: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, curly tail grubs and sassy shad for white bass. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, spinner minnow combinations and sassy shad for walleye. The best walleye reports came from anglers fishing the east side of the lake. Fishing was fair using tubes, small senkos, topwater lures, crank baits and jerk baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using stink baits, chicken liver and shrimp for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Surface temps on the main lake were in the low to mid 70s.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using stink bait and chicken liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 24 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. For updated information regarding closures in the area call 575-533-6231.

Glenwood Pond: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait.

Lake Roberts: Fishing was good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and spinners for trout. Fishing for largemouth bass was fair to good using tubes, creature baits, crank baits and jerk baits. Fishing for catfish was fair to good using stink bait and liver.

Quemado Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Rio Grande: Water flow below Elephant Butte on Monday was 1,860 cfs. Fishing below Elephant Butte was fair using small spoons and sassy shad for white bass. Fishing was fair using stink bait and liver for catfish. Fishing below Caballo was fair using cut bait for catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Snow Lake: The Snow Lake/Dipping Vat Campground has been closed until further notice due to the Whitewater/Baldy Fire Complex. For more information call 575-533-6231.
