A few weeks ago The Lady of the House and I were leaving a church rummage sale when something across the street caught my eye: A nice fence had a gaping hole in it. It looked like some vehicle had rocketed off the road, then smashed the fence and the storage building behind it.
"Wow," said The Lady of the House. "Look at that. I bet a car went through there."
Last Saturday there was a yard sale at the house on the other side of the house with the damaged fence and building.
"Let's go to that yard sale," I said to The Lady of the House.
"Why do you want to go to that yard sale?" she asked. "I don't see anything we need over there."
"They're the neighbors of the people with the busted fence," I said. "I could ask them what happened at the house behind them."
The Lady of the House turned and looked at me for a few moments.
"Let me get this straight," she said. "You'd walk up to total strangers and ask about their neighbors?"
"The story has got to be weird. How do you leave the road and drive through a fence and storage building?"
"You'd walk up to total strangers and ask about their neighbors?"
The Lady of the House repeated. "It's pretty obvious to me, somebody lost control and drove on to their property, just like the driver who mowed down our fence last Christmas."
"Well, you know, did they come out of their house and catch them?
Did the driver act like they'd done nothing wrong? Or did they steal away like thieves in the night?"
"And so you'd walk up to total strangers and ask about their neighbors?"
"Well," I said. "You never know."
"Okay," said The Lady of the House. "But I'm staying in the car."
