Air Force announces ITDY policy change

Air Force officials recently announced new policy pertaining to travel and transportation allowances provided to airmen tasked with 365-day extended deployments, also referred to as Indeterminate TDYs.

Beginning July 1, the Air Force will longer refer to 365-day extended deployments as ITDYs. Officials explained that the reason behind the name change stems from the fact that there are definitive TDY tour lengths. This policy change should better align the Air Force with the Joint Federal Travel Regulation guidelines regarding ITDYs.

In the past, airmen tasked with 365-day extended deployments received allowance entitlements for dependent travel and transportation including dependent and household goods movements. Those entitlements will no longer be available come July.

Airmen tasked with 365-day extended deployments before July 1 will not be affected by the new policy.

As of June 2012, there are more than 1,000 current requirements throughout the Central Command Area of Responsibility. By eliminating dependent travel and transportation allowances the Air Force stands to save approximately $7 million annually.

There are other programs associated with the 365-day extended deployments have not been affected at this time.

The three-day option gives airmen the option to either separate or retire in lieu of the deployment as long as they make the decision within three days of assignment notification.

The Advanced assignment consideration gives deploying airmen an opportunity to request advance assignment consideration upon selection.

The 24-month assignment deferment gives deploying Airmen the option to requesting a 24-month assignment hold following their return from deployment.
