If you ask my parents, they'd say I have been independent since I left my mother's womb.
My father tells me stories about how intelligent and defiant I was as a child. He said I figured out how to escape from my crib when I was almost 2 years old. He also told me on my first day of kindergarten I let go of his hand with no hesitation; eager to start school.
After all these years, they were right. I couldn't get out of my mother's house fast enough and New York is still my dream city.
But through the rebel phases and after a lot of growth, their faith in me keeps me going. It seems like my immediate family is making their rounds to check up on me out here though.
My mom is visiting for her birthday. No matter how independent I think I am, I will always be her baby.
Sometimes I just want to tell her that I have things in control but she's my reinforcement when the dam breaks. I mean considering how prideful I am at times, I won't call her unless I'm about to have a meltdown.
And man is she a good mom; she came right when I needed her the most without me asking. When she leaves I'll be tough as nails again. Thanks mommy.
