Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
Portales Parks and Cemetery Director Ronnie Johns was recognized by the city council for dedicating 25 years of service to the city of Portales last week at its council meeting.
City officials noted that it is rare they see workers display that type of longevity on the job.
Johns answered questions about his 25 years of service to Portales.
What is your background and where were you 25 years ago when you began to work for the city?
I was born in Portales and grew up on the family farm east of town. I have been married to my wife Linda for 20 years and have two beautiful daughters. Kaleigh is a senior and Kelsey is an 8th grader. Twenty-five years ago I was between jobs when a job with the Portales Parks Department opened up.
Tell me about the different titles you've held for the city? Did you work all 25 years in the same department?
I began working for the Parks Department in 1987 as a groundskeeper. Then in 1991, I was promoted to supervisor. In 2003, I became the director of the Parks and Cemetery Department.
Why did you choose to work for the department?
At the time, I needed a job and I enjoyed working outdoors. Plus, I knew the superintendent of Portales schools and wanted to work with him.
Tell me about a memorable experience on the job?
Probably one of the most memorable experiences was when we finished installing the city's first play structures at City Park in 1998. It was a nice addition for the kids of Portales to enjoy.
What would you have done for 25 years if you weren't working for the city?
Not sure. I always enjoyed doing construction and electrical work.
What gave you the gumption and strength to get you through 25 years at one job?
I guess I got tired of job hopping. The city offered good benefits and I enjoyed the work in the Parks Department.
What are your plans for the future and when do you plan to retire?
My plans are to work for a few more years before I retire. Then I look forward to spending more time with my family and I may start some woodworking projects.
