McGee: Encounters with the law

It's been over a month since a member of the family has returned home. In that time he's been pulled over by the police three times.

I was having a philosophical chat with The Ticketed One, pondering why he was getting so much attention from "The Fuzz."

"Are you driving too slow?" I asked. "Are you making rude gestures to them as you pass?"

"Noooo."

"After they pull you over are you saying, 'Shouldn't you be at the donut shop?'"

"Noooo."

"So why do you think they're pulling you over?"

"Lights," said The Ticketed One. "Burned out bulbs, rear lights, tag lights, turn signals. Never knew a car had so many lights."

That reminded me of my last encounter with "John Law" almost 10 years ago.

I had come out of work in the evening, fired up the automobile, flipped on the lights and discovered one of my headlights was out. I remember thinking to myself I was probably going to get pulled over.

I headed for the auto parts store.

Sure enough, I was pulled over. Soon, a policeman was at my window.

"Sir, do you know why I stopped you?" he asked.

"I suppose it's because my headlight is out," I said. "Believe it

or not I'm headed to the auto parts store."

"Well you get that fixed. I'm issuing you a warning," he said.

"One other thing."

"Yes?" I answered.

"Why is your passenger seat missing?" he asked with a strange look on his face. I thought this was weird but then I remembered an infamous murderer who had removed the passenger seat from his car.

"I needed the room," I quickly explained. "I used to have a mobile DJ business. My big speakers fit right there."

Mr. Policeman looked over my car, stared at me for a moment and nodded.

"Get that light fixed, sir," he said as he walked away.
